Basti
Ayurveda offers unique therapeutic measures that heal mild and chronic diseases. Ayurveda belives that cause of disease is saturation of toxins because of indigestion. Panchakarma eliminates these toxins from the body allowing healing and restoration of the tissues, channels, digestion and mental function.
There are five types of karmas these are Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Raktamokshan, Nasyam.
Basti therapy is primarily used for Vayu excesses, either alone or as predominant dosha deranged.
According to Charaka [Father of Ayurvedic Medicine]
"Enema is half of the medicinal therapy or even the complete treatment"
The term "Basti" was originally used in Ayurveda for enema therapies as it refers to the bladder of an animal, traditionally; the enema bag was made from the bladder of certain animals. Vata's primary seat of action in the body is colon. Colon is the main organ that absorbs the nutrients. The colon is related to all other organs and tissues of the body. So by cleansing and toning the colon, the entire body is healed and rejuvenated. Further, the anal area is densely supplied with sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibres. Hence Basti is also the choice of treatment for nervine and neurological ailments.
Basti is unlike western enemas or colonics. Enemas only cleanse the rectum and sigmoid colon. Colonics remove faeces but may weaken the mucus membranes and dry the colon. But basti is a different treatment .To give basti different types of decoctions and oils are used, which balance Vata's normal elimination and maintains healthy function of colon.
Basti is useful for many disorders including Chronic Constipation, Sciatica, Lower backache, Arthritis, Gout and Rheumatism. It also heals numerous neurological disorders like Parkinson's, MS, Muscular dystrophy, Paraplegia, Hemiplegia, Poliomyelitis, Osteoporosis, Muscle and Nerve atrophy. Basti also helps in mental conditions such as Alzheimer's, Epilepsy, Mental Retardation and Sensory Disorders.

Poly Cystic Ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a condition associated with many cysts or closed pouches containing fluid or solid material in the ovary.
Though the etiology of this syndrome remains poorly understood it is probably caused by pituitary dysfunction, anovulatary menstrual cycles, androgen excess, obesity or insulin resistance.
The symptoms range from irregular, absent or painful or profuse menstrual periods, infertility, hirsutism [excess body hair], obesity, acne, deeper voice and masculine body shape, Alopecia [hair loss or trimming] to osteoporosis.
According to Modern science the patient has to resort to hormonal replacement therapy, which results in numerous side - effects.
Ayurveda says that this condition is caused by the vitiation of "Apaan Vayu" and "Kapha Dosha" which results in improper functioning of "Artav-vaha strotas" the reproductive channel of the body.
At KARE we treat this condition by Traditional Keralian Ayurvedic treatment, which includes several internal herbal medications and Panchkarma therapy wherein herbal enemas play a major role in reversal of PCOS by balancing the Apaan Vayu. In addition we practice Iyengar Medical Yoga wherein assisted standing, sitting and inverted poses are done along with Ayurvedic Vegetarian Diet under the supervision of our in - house dietitian.

Weight Loss at KARE
Weight gain is a relative term, which ranges from just being plump to being obese. Obesity is technically defined as having a body weight in excess of 10% of the recommended weight for height. It is most common nutritional disorder in effluent societies Health risks due to obesity include cardiac disorders, diabetis, hypertension, Renal disorders, skin disorders, infertility, Stroke, osteo-arthiritis, Cancers, etc
Unlike Modern science Ayurveda believes that obesity is not just dependent on the calorie of food consumed. It says that incomplete digestion and assimilation form a toxic residue in the system. If you accumulate more toxicwaste, excess weight follows as a natural sequence.
Right metabolism depends on proper digestion, which in turn depends on healthy combination of foods. Haphazard and indiscriminate combination of food results in indigestion. Factors like lack of physical exercise, sleeping in the afternoon, consumption of heavy food and alcohol contribute to the etiology.
In Ayurvedic text, "Charkacharya" has described eight 'Nindya Prakruties' [undesirable constitutions] according to the body constitution. Among them he has also mentioned obesity. Obesity is described as 'Medoroga' in Ayurveda. It is said that it is comparatively easy to help an underweight person, rather than an overweight person. The overweight problem can be due to an actual increase in the fat component (Meda Dhatu), or it can be due to malfunctioning. These, accordingly, will need different approaches. In few cases it can be an offshoot of other metabolic disorders.
According to Ayurveda people with a kapha constitution are more likely to gain weight as compared to pitta people and predominantly vata people are the least likely to gain weight. So efforts at reducing body weight must take into consideration person's constitution also.
At KARE, we specialize in weight loss, as there is no starvation involved. Surprisingly, all food is prepared in cow's ghee so as to increase the digestive fire, which in turn increases the rate of metabolism thus contributing to weight loss
Therapies like Udvartanam wherein body is scrubbed with herbs so as to loosen the fat and Nadiswedan — herbal steam-that enables the toxins to reach the GI tract followed by Panchkarma- Lekhan basti — herbal enema-which detoxifies the system and helps in weight loss with the benefit of no side effects and no weight rebounds if some herbs are continued for a prescribed duration of time and diet is taken care as per the dietician'’s advise.
In addition Iyengar medical yoga is practiced to attain optimum health, increase the metabolism and maintain the weight, which again contributes to the aim.

Diet and Mind
All the world seeks food. It is the life source
of all beings. Clarity, longevity, intelligene,
happiness, contentment, strength and knowledge
are all rooted in food.
[Charakacharya]
Father of Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurveda teaches that each individual has the power to heal himself. Thus, this science of life offers every one the freedom to recover health by understanding the body and its needs.
Fundamental to the individual's ability to remain healthy according to Ayurveda, are the maintenance of a sound diet and a stable healthy routine.
Referred to as God itself in the Taittirya Upanishad, food is much more than nutrition. In eating, we are assimilating God by churning the essences of the universe within our body, enabling us to recall our cognitive memories.
"A healing diet gladdens the heart nourishes the body and revives memory."
[Sushrutacharya]
Father of Ayurvedic Surgery
The food that we eat affects not only our body but our entire state of mind. As is the quality of our food, so becomes the quality of our consciousness. Diet is one of the most important Therapies in Ayurveda. There is beautiful correlation between Diet and Mental constitutions - Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.
Ayurveda emphasizes a Sattvic diet for healthful living, particularly for keeping our minds happy and at peace. Sattvic diet was originally devised for the practice of yoga and the development of higher consiousness. It aids in the treatment of mental disorders because it helps restore harmony and balance to the mind.
Rajasic and Tamasic foods disturb or dull the mind and produce unrest and disease. Rajasic foods cause hyper activity and irritability, increase toxins in the blood and promote hypertension. They disturb the senses and cause the emotions to fluctuate. Tamasic foods cause hypo activity, lethargy, apathy, excess sleep, accumulates phlegm and waste materials. They dull the senses and keep the emotions heavy and resistant.
This makes it very clear that Ayurveda's integral psychology stresses on appropriate diet.
Healthy body aspires for healthy food.
"We are what we eat"
So negligence towards food leads to the disease cycle. It is high time we should realize that food is the best medicine and if this is taken care of them no medicine is required.
Unhealthy food affects the digestion and reflects on mind. Insomnia, nervousness, depression, anxiety, lethargic ness are few of the many symptoms which lead to major disorders.
Likewise stress hampers the secretion of enzymes, which help in digestion curing indigestion, which is said to be the root cause of all diseases.
At KARE, we strive to maintain the perfect harmony between an individual's body, mind and soul by serving food according to the body constitution under the supervision of our Doctors and in-house Dietician. This helps to attain the optimum health benefits and acts as a catalyst to give best results in Ayurvedic Therapies.
