|
| "You
are what you eat and ultimately you are what you digest " |
|
Our body needs different types of nutrients to perform the different functions.
The
body gets this
nourishment from
the vast variety of food we consume.
According
to age, sex, physical activity, physiological condition and ones 'Prakruti'
or constitution selection of food is very important.
|
|
|
Ayurveda recommends food
that is ‘Satvic’
in nature.
‘Satvic food’ is the food which is vegetarian based, has
a
mild sweet taste with mild flavor of spices
and is easy to digest.It
comprises of a lot of seasonal fruits and freshly prepared vegetables,
consumed at the right time, in right quantity,
considering the body constitution, with proper combination of all six
taste's and by following standard eating rituals.
According
to ayurveda
as well as modern dietetics
we should consume a ‘balanced diet’ to maintain our health
and for prevention of disease.
|
|
|
A
"balanced diet"
includes all six tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter,
pungent, and astringent.
In modern
dietetics a
"balanced diet" is a diet, which supplies all the nutrients
to the body
in
adequate amounts, according to an individual’s age, sex and
physical activity.
It also provides appropriate amounts or nutrients for growth and development,
wear and tear of the body and a small reserve for emergency. |
|
| |
| At
KARE
we serve "balanced meals",which is
vegetarian, light and includes all the six tastes.
We also make sure that the meals will include different preparations and
will suit western guests
as well.
Each guest is
served
according to his different body constitution and the different treatments
he is undergoing.
Every meal starts with a prayer and is sacred ocassion and either the
dieticians or one of the doctors explain the rituals and dietary practices
of Ayurveda.
At KARE the day starts with a morning herbal tea.
After yoga breakfast is arranged which includes a variety of dosa(non--fermented),
pancakes, porridge, rava idli, poha, upma etc.
Breakfast time depends on the treatment schedule.
After major treatment according to the season, a fruit juice or herbal
tea is served.
Afternoon 12:30 onwards lunch is served which starts with a dessert first,
followed by a complete meal comprising of dal, rice, phulka/rotla, vegetables,
salad and buttermilk.
Dinner, generally served at 7:30 pm, is lighter than lunch and comprises
a whole meal of soup, khichadi/rice, paratha, dal/kadi and salad.
The type of food is decided according the body constitution and/ or health
problems.
No starvation is recommended for weight loss programmes, instead lighter
food is substituted.
